Coastal Connections is a project to capture many forms of local experience, knowledge and memories of coastal life, to indentify changes in the environment, landscape and sense of place. It has taken place over the year culminating in September 2023, in the towns of Harwich and Morecambe, with local leadership from Libby Scarfe and Steve Fairclough. The project was made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The project created and collated interviews with local people who had grown up in the areas, recording their memories of living by and working on, the sea. It then worked to share these experiences and develop understanding of some traditional maritime skills with young people attending local schools. The aim of this was to build intergenerational links between the two groups.
The two maps offer a virtual walk to listen to these memories. Click on the links below to find numerous recordings. If you live in the area, you can follow the physical signs to hear the recordings in situ. Please do visit to hear them.
